Drafted seventh overall in the first round by the Seattle Supersonics in the 1979 NBA Draft, Johnson joined a team that was fresh off winning its first NBA championship. The Supersonics roster was deep and had plenty of star power including guard Dennis Johnson and center Jack Sikma. With minutes available on a scarce basis Vinnie only averaged 3. 4 APG and played only 38 games during his rookie season.
