Of the 76 countries ranked, the top half is largely dominated by Asian nations, the BBC reports. European countries take up a majority of spots 5 through 30 in the rankings, and the United States sits at the tail end of the top third, tied at 28th with Italy. The bottom half of the rankings feature mostly African and Latin American countries. Saudi Arabia at 66th, followed by Colombia, Qatar, Indonesia, Botswana, Peru, Oman, Morocco, Honduras, South Africa, and Ghana in last place. 47 0 0 0 13 6.
Remember quaking at the thought of algebra? A new study published in The Journal of Neuroscience looks at kids who have math anxiety and finds that tutoring can significantly reduce their nerves—altering the fear circuits in their brains. Interestingly, these changes weren’t due to an improvement in math abilities. Vinod Menon, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Plunging these kids into the very thing they fear—math—is the same idea behind exposure therapy, he says.
